Cultivating Hope: Living Abundantly in the midst of Difficulties

July 13, 2013 from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

The Cathedral Center of St. Paul

840 Echo Park Ave.

Los Angeles, CA 90026

Every person is a spiritual being. One doesn’t have to be religious, much less belong to a religious institution to have a spiritual life. Many people don’t know how to nurture their spirituality. Perhaps they are not attracted to a particular religious group. But that leaves them without tools to pursue their own spirituality.

The retreat next Saturday at the Cathedral Center in Echo Park offers resources for people to discover their own spiritual path through life’s difficulties. Life is difficult. If we want our faith to deal with real life honestly, we can’t whitewash suffering with religious platitudes. Neither can we share the despair that is the experience of many people who claim no faith.

The “Cultivating Hope” retreat will combine body prayer, singing, teaching and meditating on some Hebrew Psalms as a way to equip us to make our faith work in real life. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross offered a structure for dealing with grief. Several millennia earlier, Hebrew poets also provided a form of lament. One difference is that the Psalms assume someone is listening to my lament. Thus, these Psalms offer resources and clues whereby the practice of faith may receive, shape, and cope with the difficulties of life that shatter, alienate, and destroy. Praying the Psalms helps give shape to life’s difficulties so we may face them with the tools of faith.

Life’s difficulties always affect us in some part of the body. It is important to be conscious of our bodies. Employing the resources of yoga and Tai Chi, we will do some “body prayer” exercises to connect our bodies, minds, souls and spirits.

Please join us for this experience of quiet learning to enhance your spiritual life. The retreat is offered at no cost.
