Helicopter Hella Loud - What can we do about the noise? Let's find out.

As I write this I can hear the oscillating rumble of the helicopter circling, circling in the sky outside my house.

I get up to close the doors and block out the sound. People who don’t live here don’t appreciate how often these helicopters are invading our ear space in Leimert Park, Echo Park and lots of other neighborhoods and cities in and around Los Angeles.

There are some things that are necessary to keep us safe. And we appreciate having them in the air. But can’t something be done?

I don’t know. But that’s what I’m looking to be done. Can’t they fly higher? Can they change their flight paths? Can they buy quieter helicopters or aftermarket add-ons to make them quieter.

After months of deliberations and asking friends and neighbors what they thought, I finally decided to do the story after helicopters hovered above my house from 4 a.m. -ish to 9 a.m. - ish.

Remember the bomb scare in a Cadillac in Leimert Park? It turned out to be fire crackers in the back seat of an illegally parked car.

For nearly 5 hours, helicopters hovered above my house, waking up my family and keeping us awake. I called the helicopter dispatch (213-485-2600) of the Los Angeles Police Department, not to complain, but to confirm why they were up there.

Only thing, the police didn’t have any helicopters. There were no bears in the air. Dispatch told me they were media helicopters, both of them.

We have to be able to do something about that.

And so we are investigating the rules and regulations, interviewing officials and experts, videotaping helicopters, talking to residents and creating graphics to simply and visually show the effects of helicopter noise.

With your support, we’ll see what we can do.
