Saturday, December 1 – THE QUEERER THEY COME: Film & Video Show – 8 PM

A night of artist-made films and videos from around the world, including works by Vivek Shraya, Campbell X, Keith Wilson, Penelope Spheeris, Matt Wolf, and ioulex + Mx Justin Vivian Bond. The program centers around queer folk—outcasts and trailblazers—who are often at odds with the norms of their larger communities, LGBTQIA and otherwise. From a 1970s post-gay love story to the fearless and fabulous dancehall ladies of mid-90s London and beyond, this program paints a portrait as rich and nuanced as queer life itself. Friday, December 7 – ON THESE SHOULDERS WE STAND – 5 PM

Glenne McElhinney's documentary, On These Shoulders We Stand is about Los Angeles LGBT civil rights leaders from the 60s and 70s. After the screening a panel of community leaders will discuss LGBT civil rights in Los Angeles then and now. This event is being sponsored by the Coalition to Celebrate, Educate and Stop Hate, a growing coalition of individuals and groups in the Echo Park, Silver Lake and Cyprus Park areas dedicated to ending hate and hate crimes and to making our broader community a peaceful, harmonious, respectful and fundamentally safe place for everyone. Friday, December 7 – NIHILIST INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL – 8 PM

For the thirteenth year, the Nihilist Cultural Foundation presents the Nihilist International Film Festival. The festival includes two hours of short films from around the country and around the world. The films range from troubling to hilarious, from profound to completely silly. Pretty much, something for everyone (except children and clergy). Festival Director Elisha Shapiro commented, “I have seen the films in this year’s Nihilist Film Festival. It’s an amazing selection. If I were not already looking forward to the end of civilization, I would be worried. Twisted, amusingly twisted.” As a special feature, all those who bring their own televisions and arrive fifteen minutes early will be able to include their appliances in the traditional ritual Blessing of the Televisions. Nihilist Film Festival director Elisha Shapiro is a Los Angeles-based conceptual artist. He is known for presenting the 1984 Nihilist Olympics and the 1999 Nihilism Expo. He was also the Nihilist Party candidate for Governor in 2006, for President in 1988, and for LA county sheriff in 1992. Most recently, The Funniest Nihilist in last year’s LA Fringe Festival.

Saturday, December 8 – FILMMAKERS ALLIANCE SHOWCASE – 8 PM

“Films and Filmmakers - that's what it's all about!” Come and see what FA members and other members of the LA and global filmmaking community are up to creatively, and support the great work that the EPFC people are doing in our community. The center is a volunteer run organization that offers fantastic super 8mm film classes, youth classes, and much more, so we do ask that you leave a $5 donation at the door to help keep the Center going. Come see the EPFC youth's latest creation—an evening of film and video projection, multi-media installation, and performance works exploring issues related to the body. Potluck dinner at 6pm, with the exhibition open from 7–9 pm. This event is FREE and all are welcome!

Thursday, December 13 – LA AIR: PABLO VALENCIA – 8 PM

LA AIR is a new artist-in-residence program that invites Los Angeles filmmakers to utilize EPFC resources in creating a new work over a four-week period.Though he is famed for his tongue-in-cheek criticisms, his satires of traditional culture, and his unending social responsibility, few remember that Pablo Valencia, a Los Angeles based artist, began first and foremost: as an artist; a collagist, painter, sculptor, sound designer, and filmmaker. He creates representational and abstract pieces moving freely between documentation, surrealism, and formalism. Pablo was instrumental in the founding of the Overseas Chinese Artists Foundation as well as laying the groundwork for experimental artists in the East Village where he published three books about the future generation of artists. His work has been displayed all over the world in Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and the United States and recently has been commissioned by the Tate Modern. Later his name would become famous with projects such as the ‘Bird’s Nest,’ the Olympic Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, a project he quickly distanced himself from following completion. His role as an activist deepened following the closing of his blog. His work has been shown extensively throughout the Americas and Europe. During his residency at the Echo Park Film Center he has strived to make work that is a meditation on time and marked by a pursuit of honesty. He has created work for this show on Super 8, regular 8, and video. Pablo currently resides in Los Angeles. His LA AIR show is sponsored by Coke. Friday, December 14 – EPFC FILMMOBILE presents: IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (ON ICE) – 8 PM

What would the holidays be without some uncontrollable sobbing? Come out tonight and huddle around the Filmmobile for our annual screening of It’s A Wonderful Life... There will be Christmas cake! Saturday, December 15 – NEW WORKS SALON VIII – 8 PM

Several local and visiting artists will present in-progress or recently completed works. Kate Brown will show Couch (16mm, 3min, b/w, California) and recent 16mm footage from Los Angeles. Dana Berman Duff will show Vibrant Matter, short studies of the unstable nature of matter in 16mm film and digital video projection. Kate Lain will show her work In the Usual Manner, in which photographer Barret Oliver brings his darkroom and gear to the Huntington Library to produce hauntingly beautiful work ‘in the usual manner’ of the nineteenth-century photographer. Eve-Lauryn LaFountain will show her work They Told Me ‘Apikaan’ Means Braid, which was created as a 50 foot 16mm film loop installation that physically ran the length of a gallery at Calarts in October as part of the group show This is All We Have in Common. The piece explores issues of identity and the breakdown of tradition as a loop of information that is constantly circling. Originally shot on 8mm film by Rick Bahto, optically printed to 16mm, hand processed, performed and conceived by Eve-Lauryn LaFountain. Plus more TBA!
