Among ideas such as the addition of new benches, pocket parks, and decorative patterns featured on pavements, is the plan to install hitching posts to the corners of Sunset & Alvarado. However, these posts are not to be confused with giant chess pieces. They are decorative bollards that are meant to be a nod to Echo Park's 'Victorian-era' horse and buggy days.

Are these hitching posts a classic reminder of the 'Victorian-era' or out of place in the modern city?

Also included in these beautification plans are solar-powered trash cans, street trees, and a pocket park on the corner of Sunset & Park Ave. Engineers are planning to return to Echo Park in January to gather more responses from residents and to create another presentation. Don't look for these changes anytime soon, construction would not begin for another year.

The festival includes two hours of short films from around the country and around the world. The films range from troubling to hilarious, from profound to completely silly. Pretty much, something for everyone (except children and clergy). Festival Director Elisha Shapiro commented, “I have seen the films in this year’s Nihilist Film Festival. It’s an amazing selection. If I were not already looking forward to the end of civilization, I would be worried. Twisted, amusingly twisted.” As a special feature, all those who bring their own televisions and arrive fifteen minutes early will be able to include their appliances in the traditional ritual Blessing of the Televisions. Nihilist Film Festival director Elisha Shapiro is a Los Angeles-based conceptual artist. He is known for presenting the 1984 Nihilist Olympics and the 1999 Nihilism Expo. He was also the Nihilist Party candidate for Governor in 2006, for President in 1988, and for LA county sheriff in 1992. He creates representational and abstract pieces moving freely between documentation, surrealism, and formalism. Pablo was instrumental in the founding of the Overseas Chinese Artists Foundation as well as laying the groundwork for experimental artists in the East Village where he published three books about the future generation of artists. His work has been displayed all over the world in Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea and the United States and recently has been commissioned by the Tate Modern. Later his name would become famous with projects such as the ‘Bird’s Nest,’ the Olympic Stadium for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, a project he quickly distanced himself from following completion. His role as an activist deepened following the closing of his blog. His work has been shown extensively throughout the Americas and Europe. During his residency at the Echo Park Film Center he has strived to make work that is a meditation on time and marked by a pursuit of honesty. He has created work for this show on Super 8, regular 8, and video. Pablo currently resides in Los Angeles. His LA AIR show is sponsored by Coke. He is a resident of Los Angeles. More images and information are available on http://www.monstrouscreature.org. FREE EVENT!

Celebrating, and empowering, through works from some of the nations most artistically significant Black female voices, KTC’s Skylight Theatre is providing a home for this unique world premiere, five-week production. Featuring new plays, visual arts, and community events, collaborators have created this platform for encouraging Black women to self-identify as dynamic, expressive, and nurturing contributors to society.

“Black Women State of the Union seeks to uncover the present: where we are now, what is the state of us now. That can only continue to propel us forward. We have plays that represent who we were, but it also speaks to who we are, where we are, where we’re going and who we are becoming.” - Director Nataki Garrett

Offerings will include Sigrid Gilmer’s Simulacra, which pokes fun at the representations of Black women in recent feature films; Lisa B. Thompson’s I Don’t Want to Be, about the ties of survival that strengthen the mothers of innocent crime victims; Kellie Dantzler’ Evolutionary takes a look at a prominent Civil Rights activist mother giving deathbed advise on the need for humor; Tanya Alexander-Henderson’s Ritual is a poetic inspirational meditation; and Penelope Lowder’s The Follicle Prison War, an hilarious parody about notions of beauty and hair weaves set in the future.

Thursday, October 18 – FLORIAN CRAMER PRESENTS WORK FROM WORM.FILMWERKPLAATS – 8 PM
In more than a decade, the film work space at WORM, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, has become one of Europe's leading DIY film labs and production space for non-narrative (and sometimes also narrative) film. It is a vital part of a large international network of DIY labs and micro cinemas. Florian Cramer from Rotterdam has brought along a selection of 8 and 16mm films from WORM.filmwerkplaats and will introduce them to the audience. These films were made with intricate analog laboratory processes and printing techniques. Many of them are lyrical, many of them oscillate between nature and cityscapes,
abstract and concrete imagery. In stark contrast, the 45 min. film Ctrl-Alt-Esc from Rotterdam is an adults-only exploitation movie featuring Joep van Lieshout as maniac artist/serial killer Bokito and, most importantly, the building of WORM.

Saturday, October 20 – MOVIES & TV BY MARK TOSCANO AND LORI FELKER – 8 PM
Mark Toscano and Lori Felker are two makers who are very serious about exploring the un-serious. This program brings together recent TV-shaped videos by Felker and a whole slew of 16mm films by Toscano. Lori Felker is a film/videomaker, programmer, projectionist, performer and collaborator. Her work employs multiple formats, styles, and structures, all attempting to make sense of the simultaneous simplicity and chaos of humanity. She is enamored with awkwardness, ineloquence, frustration, searching, trying and failing (or falling) and considers herself an "experiential" filmmaker. www.FelkerCommaLori.com, variablearea.tv. Mark Toscano is an archivist and filmmaker, though not necessarily in that order. Program: Videos by Lori Felker: It Doesn’t Matter (2012), Broken New (Disaster) (2012, with Chris Royalty), Broken New (Drama) (2012, with Chris Royalty), Broken New (Conspiracy) (2012, with Chris Royalty) / 16mm films by Mark Toscano: The Electrolysis of Brine (2008), February 2008 & June 1967 (2010), Finding the Horn (2008), The Wofobs (2008), WDD / CHL (2009), Rating Dogs on a Scale of 1 to 10 (2011), Demonstration (2012), Process of Elimination (2012), Releasing Human Energies (2012).

Thursday, October 25 –LA AIR / JOEP BROUWER & MAURICE de BRUIJNE – 8 PM
LA AIR is a new artist-in-residence program that invites Los Angeles filmmakers to utilize EPFC resources in creating a new work over a four-week period. This month, our artists are Joep Brouwer and Maurice de Bruijne, students at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam who are in the midst of a three-month internship at EPFC. Joep’s project will focus on “exploring and capturing parts of daily life. The interaction and disconnection between people in search of happiness, wellness, love and fulfillment.” Maurice will be working with the concept of the Flywheel as defined by Wikipedia: “Flywheels are often used to provide continuous energy in systems where the energy source is not continuous. In such cases, the flywheel stores energy when torque is applied to the energy source and it releases stored energy when the energy source is not applying torque to it.”

With over 20,000 people joining the festivities last year, the Los Feliz Village Street Fair is on once again!

For some background knowledge, the fair was originally started in the early 1990’s by a few restaurant owners who wanted to give back to the community for their support over the years. As the years have gone on, it has now grown into an explosion of talented local shop & restaurant owners, artists and musicians bringing high-quality entertainment and a great shopping experience to attendees.

As if great vendors, music, and food weren't enough, there's something for the kiddies as well! With carnival rides, a mini play space at Pinwheels Preschool booth and free art activites at the Zimmer Children’s Museum, your kids will have plenty to keep them entertained.

Still not convinced? Check out last year's fair for yourself in this great video:

Friday, August 3 & Saturday, August 4 – ACTION ITEM – 8 PM
Action Item is band about moments. We've realized over the last couple of years that we share moments with fans that we/you will be able to remember for the rest of our/your lives. Our BIG idea is a long time coming so we'd like for it to be as descriptive as possible. This next album is make or break for our band. Don't get me wrong, we've experienced more success than most bands ever will, touring the world, having radio play, meeting our idols, selling out venues, working with A list industry, etc but it's time for us to show everyone what we're really made of. And we're off to a great start. This next collection of songs is by far some of the best material weever had & we can't wait to show it to you. Our idea: We will be documenting the experience of making our new record & along with tons of other footage from headlining, other recording, tours before we had any fans at all, we will be making a Plot-Driven Documentary of the band and how we got to where we are now. The Best Part: In 9 cities across the country, we will be holding movie premieres, red carpet & all. We are dressing up & we ask that if you attend, you dress up as well. When you walk down that red carpet, that is YOUR moment to shine. Most people will never get to experience walking a red carpet, and I know none of us have SO we thought that would be nice touch. Once you're inside, take your seat inside the theater. The movie will run for 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a Q&A about the music industry. We know there's a lot of fans out there who want to be a part of the industry but don't know where to start. Here's your chance to ask
anything you want because we have seen it all. Finally, we will be
performing a full band acoustic set of all new songs that will be on our
next record.

Thursday, August 9 – ROBERT NELSON TRIBUTE SCREENING #2: SEVEN FROM
SIXTY-SEVEN – 8 PM
A second in a series of tribute screenings to the late, great Robert Nelson. 1967 was a particularly prolific year for Nelson, marking not only the completion and premiere of his epic classic The Great Blondino, but additionally the release of no less than TEN additional films, several of which will be shown in this program. More well-known shorts like The Awful Backlash, Hot Leatherette, and Grateful Dead will share the bill with the little-seen duo Penny Bright and Jimmy Witherspoon and Half-Open and Lumpy. If you haven’t seen a Nelson film, this is a great program to start with, full of his characteristic unpredictable humor and formal invention. HOT LEATHERETTE (1967, 16mm, b/w, sound, 4min.) THE OFF-HANDED JAPE (w/ William
T. Wiley, 1967, 16mm, color, sound, 8min.) HALF-OPEN AND LUMPY (1967, 16mm, b/w & color, sound, 3min.) PENNY BRIGHT AND JIMMY WITHERSPOON (1967, 16mm, color, sound, 3min.) THE AWFUL BACKLASH (w/ William Allan, 1967, 16mm, b/w, sound, 14min.) GRATEFUL DEAD (1967, 16mm, color, sound, 9min.) THE GREAT BLONDINO (w/ William T. Wiley, 1967, 16mm, b/w & color, sound, 43min.)

Saturday, August 11 – SOCAL CLOSE-UPS RELEASE PARTY– 8 PM
To celebrate the release of a new ebook and app guide to Los Angeles, author and Los Angeles Times travel writer Chris Reynolds offers a high-speed digital slide and video show. Featuring hundreds of great images from LA Times photographers and videographers, the night is free, but Reynolds would love it if you downloaded the ebook ($4.99) or the image-rich app (12 chapters, 99 cents each). FREE!

Thursday, August 16 – TONEWHEEL/FILM REEL: Personal film work of DOUGLAS
KATELUS – 8 PM
Tonewheel / Film Reel is a program of 16mm film and video work by Douglas Katelus, a San Francisco based filmmaker and organist. These movies are derived from observation while occasionally searching for what sits below those endless layers of asphalt, concrete and gasoline. The evening’s program will be in two parts. First a never-ending road trip followed by an homage to dead technology and lost landscape. Numerous works will be screened produced between 2004–2012. The most recent of which are set to a
live musical performance on the Hammond Organ.

Saturday, August 18th – A PLACE ON EARTH – 8pm
With an introduction by filmmaker and restorationist Ross Lipman (schedule permitting) A Place On Earth is a fiction film made with the participation of a real commune in Moscow, one in which the director himself lived. As with Palms, Aristakisyan's previous work, A Place on Earth is not just a film; it is an encounter, and it leaves one unsettled by its radical ethical demands. Says Aristakisyan: "The film does not leave room to maneuver and avoid change... It precludes the very possibility for indulgence in collective delusions after having seen it... It also precludes the possibility for neatly sweeping its contents under the intellectual rug...This is not a socially conscious film. There is no society... It is not a philosophical film either. There are no authorial points of view or ideas. It has to be admitted—this film is dangerous. Truly dangerous." Dir. Artur Aristakisyan, 2001, 120min, projected from DVD

Thursday, August 23 – NEW WORKS SALON V – 8 PM
Several local and visiting artists will present new in-progress or recently completed works.

Thursday, August 30 – ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE: PAOLO DAVANZO & LISA MARR– 8 PM

Our August artists-in-residence Paolo Davanzo and Lisa Marr present aprogram of new work. FREE!

However, I am shamed to say that before this new endeavor I had little to no knowledge about Echo Park and it's rich culture. Which then, in today's search-engine friendly world, led to a Google search. However, I am shamed to say that before this new endeavor I had little to no knowledge about Echo Park and it's rich culture. Which then, in today's search-engine friendly world, led to a Google search. What I found was a city occupied by an extremely diverse group of people, landmarks, beautiful homes, but most importantly a city passionate about preserving its voice and culture. Even with my extremely modest knowledge of Echo Park, I can already sense the pride and passion that this city emulates, and I can't wait to be a part of helping to keep members of this online community informed and reminding them of what a beautiful city they live in!
